In different parts of Britain people call their meals by different
names. For most people the main meal of the day is called dinner. But some
families eat this at midday, others eat in the evening. People who have dinner
in the evening have a smaller meal called lunch at midday, and people who have
dinner at midday usually have another meal (which they call tea) between five
and six o’clock, or they have supper a little later.
A traditional English breakfast is a very big meal- sausages, bacon,
eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms. But nowadays many people just have cereal with milk
and sugar, or toast with marmalade, jam, or honey. The traditional breakfast
drink is tea, which people have with cold milk.
Lunch isn’t small either. At lunch, which is about at one o’clock, cold
mutton, fish with potatoes, salad pickles generally grace the table. Lunch is a
quick meal.
In England tea means two things. It is a drink and a meal. Some people
have afternoon tea with sandwiches, cakes, and, of course, a cup of tea.
The evening meal is the main meal of the day for many people. They
usually have it quite early, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and often the whole
family eats together. Dinner begins with some salad, followed by a clear soup,
fish, vegetable and dessert.
The supper might consist of an omelet, bacon, sandwich and a cup of
coffee, tea or cocoa.
The British like food from other countries, especially Italian, French,
Chinese and Indian. But it is probably true that British food doesn’t have a
very good reputation among people from overseas.
